Forest School

What is Forest School?

Forest School provides a unique opportunity for children to learn in an outdoor environment. Children are able to engage in experiences that allow them to be creative, take measured risks and learn new skills, helping them to keep healthy and have a respect for nature. It offers a child centred approach, where participants make choices for themselves and initiate their own learning.
Forest School has developed from a Scandanavian education system and is about children and young people building self esteem and independence through exploring and experiencing the natural world. It is a programme delivered by trained Forest School practitioners. Each Forest School programme is designed to suit the needs of the individuals within the group and is adapted as children grow in confidence, skills and understanding.
We all know children love playing outdoors in natural spaces. The ethos of Forest School allows children the time and space to develop skills, interests and understanding through practical, hands on experience. It also allows practitioners to step back and observe the children in order to know how to support and inspire them to learn further. It is also lots of fun!

Children in the main Nursery at Henry Allen take part in a 6 week block of Forest School sessions led by a qualified practitioner during the academic year. These sessions take place on the grounds of Woodside Junior School.
